Boats big and small, and some steam too
Where's the water? ..and how to get it back - Refilling a pound.
If there is one thing a boat needs, it's water. Sometimes on canals pounds can become empty or low through water leakage, faults, or vandalism. This video hopes to show that with care you can refill empty pounds yourself.
This was filmed on the Atherstone Lock flight starting at lock 5.
Note. Please don’t under take refilling the pounds yourself if you are at all unsure of the problems that can befall you. Call the CRT Emergency line.
Should you need to run water do not rely on the bywashes to carry that much water they are not design for this use. Use paddles and ensure that more water isn’t entering the next pound than that can cope with. Flooding can cause serious damage and you could be...

Another year of fun and games with historic boats. Michael Pinnock won best in show, but not for his clutch, and that bit of piling saw plenty of other action throughout the weekend!

Edgware And Balham Rescued 2020

Michael Pinnock brought the town class pair Edgware and Balham from Nether Hayford down to his yard in London. I managed to catch them running through Widewater Lock. As you can see they need a fair bit of work, as the previous owner didn't really look after them and mainly kept them to stop other people mooring outside his house.

Hull High Tide 9th April 2024

One of the bigger tides this year, all thanks to the eclipse. The strong westerly seemed to reduce the size of the tide a bit. We are due a similar size tide tomorrow, but with southerlies it might be bigger even if it's just the waves.

Victoria On The Driffield Navigation 2014

The longest boat ever to go up the Driffield Navigation - and the last carrying commercial vessel to do so since the 1940's (or 1960's to Frodingham).

Chuffing great time - Railway children line in January
Просмотров 3086 месяцев назад
Last minute decision to have a day out on the Keithley and Worth Valley railway near Leeds, meant an interesting, and mostly fun January day out. Many steam railways close through January, but wanting to show some thanks to keeping open on cold dark days I decided a trip was worth the trip. Running through Bronte country, and the line that was used for the classic film The Railway Children, bri...
Storm Henk Floods 2024 - Tame at Tamworth and River Trent at Long Eaton

I've not been doing any boating recently, but passing by Sawley again presented this opportunity to take some video of the high water at Long Eaton. I don't want this channel to end up just being floods, but I've been busy to do any other videos at the moment.

Fascinating
Where abouts is this please?
Atherstone lock flight
Superb, thanks Mikey
Getting everything back in water can be a day's work if you're alone. I bet you had a good workout. Good job!
For a pleasant day boating, bring a push bike. :))
That's a couple of hours and walking that you could have done without Mike . Cheers
Thanks so much for this video. I found it very informative and interesting.
Had the exact same problem on that flight a year ago. CRT are aware of it but do nothing to fix it. 😡 A local told me it happens all the time.
Hard work on your own Mike😂
I got my steps in that day!
Good job you did there with the locks. Have a nice weekend, best regards from Norway
I learn so much from your videos, despite having boated for a few years. Thank you.
The exits from Blisworth Tunnel looked very fast - 5+ mph surely?!?!!
I timed them once and it was just over 4mph, however it's best to get through tunnels as fast as possible to reduce the chance of meeting another boat, and to get 'em ahead.
I take it that night cruising is all part of the 're-enactment'?
Yes, they’d need to “get ‘em ahead” especially the first few days just in case of any delays. However even with straight boating it’s still a long way in a short time.
Am i wrong in thinking that the restauration has come to a halt? That first lock works, which is nice, ofcourse. How about the last one in the video? Doors look fairly new?
Hi Ed, not sure if my previous reply worked, but basically all of the locks work, however there is a limited height bridge over the chamber of the next lock limiting the size of boats that can go through, but not as much as the Skerne Road Bridge at Wansford, which was sold to the council in the 60's and replaced with a fixed bridge (originally it was a swing bridge), thus limiting the size of boats that can go any further. We are trying to get the council to replace it, but they have no money.
That's a real shame that is. Well....we'll just hope that the council will have the money (and the will...) to replace it in the near future. Otherwise all the hard work goes to waste.
I didn't know they had propane back then.
That's nothing compared to the 2014 flood. The road past the coy was shut for about a week I drove down it one evening and at one point was up to my headlights in the discovery and getting a bit of a squeaky bum. There was a portaloo floating around the loch house garden as it was being renovated at the time the loch gate looked like horseshoe falls and the flow across the tow path below the loch was that deep and fast I wouldn't of fancied walking it. If you lost your footing you'd of been down the end of jacks lane in seconds it was that fast.
If all your videos are like this one, I am hooked. This was great.
Interesting show with some very nice Narrowboats and interesting owners .... Shame there were some miserable sods there as well......😟
NBs Alton & Halsall not there. Probably too busy working! 😁😅👍
Fabulous video and event. Thank you, Mike.
And A good time was had by All .
Well done Frankie you had a bit of a challenge at the turn didn’t you. Glad to see you on the helm x
Thank you Mike as always for the great video! And thank you so much for providing proof of my steering on Nutfield !! 😊
Well done, it was good to see you at the helm, you had a bit of a challenge though at the turn I see, no one wants that. Great stuff x
@@catthompson2984 thank you ! It was fun to steer at the rally and to be honest the challenge looks bigger in the video than what was in reality 😊
I just discovered your channel. I love the sound of historic narrow boats. What engine do you have?
It's a Lister JP2 if you look you'll find a video of me starting it.
@@mykaskin cool! I’ll watch that video
At :28, the bridge has the Morseley Iron Works name on the structure. That is beautiful, the way things were done properly in years past.n
What are you carrying today? Lovely video that sound is mesmerising.
Facinating!
accident waiting to happen, wonder how many times the engine stalled while maneuvering and hit things.
That’s down to the skill of the steerer, just like always.
Makes you enjoy pulling the lawn mower rope 10 times because you forgot to turn the switch on...nothing in comparison to starting this engine.
My auntie, uncle and grandma are all in this footage. I think my grandad may have filmed it. Where did you get it, please?
We can't remember his name, he was involved with the Brigham Sailing Club in the early days. We think they might have come up to my Dad at an Driffield Navigation event.
What a narrowboat SHOULD sound like.
Keep up the good work michael From Mr best and family
Shame steam and vintage is no longer happening
Mike, don't think we've ever met. Hopefully one day. I'm interested to know how long Victoria takes to pass through Harecastle?
About 30 minutes so long as no-one is in front slowing me down!
How much power does it make? And whats the LOA & gross tonnage thank you
I don't know for sure - it was for sale at one point and may have had some of these details, but at a guess maybe 30hp (probably much less in the water), it's about 45 foot long, and I'd hazzard a guess at about 20 ton.
Excellent. Great to see the different types of steam at use on land based traction as well as water based traction. Superb vlog...
Glad to see them being rescued, they have been an ever sadder sight over the years at Nether Heyford.
Seen these fee years ago . The boats were my nan and grandads when they worked the boats in late 60s
A great event, excellently captured.
The Anderton Boat Lift is a marvel of industrial age engineering and it's brilliant to see it restored and working again. I live not far away from it. Not a local, but I appreciate the engineering. ...Buuut, watching it work is something you really only need to see once, as it's not exactly a thrill a minute. Different if you're in a boat that needs to use it and you have hours to kill.
Sorry but this has to be said .... Fucking Vandal
Brilliant
Cheers for that Mike, looked a great day out.
Nice!
The way a vessel like Parfield calmly turns & comes alongside !
Alcohol and arrogance on display....
Very Disappointing to see lock gates been abused !!!!!😢😢
Запуск старинного одноцилиндрового керосинового движка... масло для смазки доливать каждый час, туда, где есть движущиеся части. Запуск - как в космическом корабле, а потом ещё следи, чтобы не заглох... И кораблик поплыл. Чудо.
Remarkable bit of history.
